We Fished Friday afternoon on a beautifully bright sunny DCL kinda day. Water temps. were between 62 and 64.5 degrees. Water clarity was surprisingly stained in a lot of spots. As for the fishing it wasn't exactly picturesque...... my son managed to angle four 12" smallies and an equal amount of pickeral in about three hours of angling time. It was goose egg time for me but no problem, who better to post that egg with than your best friend (son). It was a pride chomping ride back to the "Burg of Frost" having to listening to his war stories of the angling day but I had a huge old grin on the whole time, if you know what I mean.

It's no big deal I love that drive....

As I drive by the state park right before the bridge, I happen to see about 10-12 DNR and park ranger officials standing in what looked like a huddle. Like any nosey person I slowed down right by the park bridge and look out to my right and see a boat "Bow up".

So I hoped in the the old starcraft when I got home and headed for the state park to confirm what I thought I saw. Sure enough, that is the DNR's big girl in about 20ft of water.

I came across this and thought I would share for informational purposes:

"MD Department of natural Resources
Deep Creek Lake - Garrett County, Maryland

Frequently Asked Questions

Spring 2013

Is Deep Creek Lake clean?

Yes! Since 1950, The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has intermittently tested water clarity—one of the best indicators of water quality—in Deep Creek Lake. Studies show that, despite occasional variations, the water clarity in the Lake is very similar to the clarity in 1953.

Is it safe to swim in the Lake?

Absolutely! The Garrett County Health Department regularly tests bacterial contamination (they’ve done so since 1965), sampling 21 sites around the Lake, including coves and near shore that are particularly sensitive to bacteria. The results: According to County Environmental Health Director Steve Sherrard, bacteria levels in Deep Creek Lake are very low and are not increasing.

Is sediment "filling in" the Lake?

No. Silt and Sedimentation through erosion is a natural process that occurs across all landscapes. Landscape runoff contributes in a significant manner to shoreline erosion as well as the more obvious and understandable erosion that occurs from the energy of wind and water driven waves meeting a shoreline. Human activities on land and water often increase the rate and volume of sedimentation.

DNR is conducting a study to determine the source and flow of sediments into the Lake. The study will be released later in the year, however preliminary results show that some coves have more sediment deposits, while some coves are seeing almost none.

What is the status of the Lake’s fish populations?

Deep Creek Lake supports 18 fish species, including a healthy and popular Walleye fishery with legal-size fish averaging 15-17" and occasional opportunities at trophy size fish and a well-balanced Yellow Perch population with fish arranging from 5 – 12 inches.

The lake’s most sought after gamefish, Smallmouth Bass, continues to maintain sustainable harvest levels and a diverse age and size structure. The Largemouth Bass population – reduced in a small amount in 2010 by a fish kill caused by warmer than normal water temperature – experienced good reproduction in 2012, and 10,000 fingerlings were stocked to enhance the population.

Golden Shiners
are the lake’s most abundant forage fish, and Bluegill and Pumpkinseed populations are common to abundant with enough quality size fish to interest anglers. Northern Pike are becoming more common, and Chain Pickerel are very abundant. Common Carp, which are plentiful and reach very large sizes, are also generating increasing angler interest.
About 5,000 Brown, Rainbow and Golden Trout are stocked annually, and adequate coldwater and oxygen at the lake bottom during summer allow for year-round angling opportunities. All of the fish species in the Lake thrive there because of quality lake habitat which includes a variety of submerged aquatic vegetation, good water quality and much adjacent forested landscapes.

What can I do to help protect the Lake?

You can do your part to help slow the effects of erosion by planting more native plants on your property -- plants that will soak up the precipitation. When water runs off surfaces that are too compacted to absorb the water, it carries silt, soil particles sediments, and pollution with it. A wide buffer of shrubs and deep rooted grasses at the shoreline as well as trees and shrubs planted up the slope along driveways, decks and homes will help to keep the Lake healthy, improve our landscape and often increase your property value!

If you move your vessel between bodies of water, be cautious about bringing along "hitch-hikers". These can be plants or animals that don’t presently live in Deep Creek Lake now, but once released here, could invade, upset the balance of the lake ecology and replace our native populations. Wash and dry any equipment used in other bodies of water (fishing tackle, waders, boats – hulls of all sorts, life jackets, paddles, props etc.) to remove plants and animals (they can be very small) before heading out to recreate on another body of water.
Meet Hank Patterson

Here's a liitle something for everybody who ever felt that flyfishermen were all insufferable elitists. Or who have ever been guided; to some extent I think most fallible human beings, when placed in a such a position of angling 'expertise', take on some slight semblance to Hank, and it doesn't matter too much what kind of tackle might be used.

Perhaps this is to compensate for the ever-uncertain outcome associated with assuming the responsibility for taking anyone else to a spot or showing them a technique? The fish may or may not bite, but in the meantime, whether it is to assure the client by keeping his hopes up, or to defend the guide's own sense of as yet wholy unsupported stream cred, to one degree or another, a 'tude is often adopted. The person you are about to meet in this three part video series takes that to a new, rather comical spoof level, which I thought you all would enjoy.

Fletcher's still hot- pics

I took today off and drove downtown to see how the tidal Potomac was fishing. I started trying to get in on this shad on the fly thing the last couple of years but have to admit I really didn't feel like I had figured it out yet.

I had to make sure my daughter got on the bus so I did not get downtown until after the morning bite. I was worried the boats would all be rented by the time I got down there.

Pulling into Fletcher's around 9am I was happy to find plenty of boats available and only a few anglers on the river around the cove. Not having planned ahead, all my heavier fly rods are at DCL. I always have a 9 ft 5 wt, so I loaded the large arbor reel with 6 wt full sink line and made some short leaders. Not ideal but it would have to do. Luckily I did have all my fly boxes and bins home with me because I was recently doing spring inventory, so I had all my shad flies and darts.

Plenty of boats when I got there

High tide when I left in the afternoon

And this was the same area when I got there at low tide

I rowed out to a seam between the main current and the DC cove and started swinging flies and darts. For about 30 minutes of changing depth, flies, and retrieve strip speeds I hooked up with my first fish. It hit at the beginning of the retrieve when I was on or near bottom and I was surprised when I landed my first catfish ever on a fly rod.

It took another 20-30 minutes of changings things up and a short discussion with another fisherman and bing, I found today's patern. Two flies seemed to work consistently, a small pink dart type fly and a larger whit jig with mylar body and a tiny gold blade, pictured. Not technically a fly.

The key was to cast across and down into the main current or make shorter cast directly down current, pilling up line on the water either way and letting the lure bite and get down, followed by a pause after the swing. Then it was short, fast, one handed strips. Almost as fast as I could with one hand. I seemed to get takes at all stages of the retrieve but usually right at the beggining near the bottom or closer to the surface. You needed to be ready almost all the way to the boat. No need to really set the hook when retrieving that aggressively since I was usually mid strip during the take. I did lose quite a few but my 5 wt Progressive action/tip fly rod was lacking a little back bone for the larger fish. But it was a whole lot of fun once hooked up on that light rod.

It was mostly American shad with a few hickories and some white perch mixed in.

Here are some specimens.

Here is a hickory

And a little white perch.

Our nations capital from one of Fletcher's famous boats

And for you Striper anglers, there was a guy in the center of the main current using spinning gear and some big baits that I noticed tangling with something that seemd bigger than a shad. Caught him grabbing a nice little rock fish.

I fished between 10 and 2, which is not the ideal time of day, but the fish were there and biting if you could figure out the pattern. I lost count of how many I hooked up with. To top it off I watched a bald eagle swing right down to the water and snatch a hickory shad. Tried to grab the camera but he flew into the trees and I couldn't locate him.

With the next few days expected to be relatively cool, the run should continue so get there if you like this sort of thing. Spinning anglers with tandem dart rigs were doing well in a nearby boat. I brought some spoons on the advice of 4u2 but never broke them out. I did have one of Don's tips in mind when I selected the white Mylar jig, which turned out to be deadly on the Americans.

Hope you enjoyed the pics. I drop the boat at DCL next weekend but won't really start getting there until early June. Coaching the kids softball team has me stuck in the burbs.

Tight lines.
