Dont know if its the approaching 'dog days' of summer, stumbling across my little box of ice jigs in the garage, or the accidental click onto an ice fishing web site,,,,but I think im ready for some ice fishing!!  Strange how the feeling has really seemed to pick up this week.  Im hoping it subsides some or I'll never get through bow season.  I think I'll start finishing that new sled this weekend......and throw the vex batteries on the charger....

I don't care what they wrote about you on the bathroom wall at Arrowhead.....you're my kind of guy and we seem to think alike.

I went to New Germany to visit a friend this afternoon. On my way home I rode down Savage River Road and got out for an ice cream at BJ's store. That store is a sad reminder of what it once was. They have hardly any food or ice cream or pepperoni rolls anything like that. They look like they are about to close down. They said the low water levels, rock snot and the new regs on drinking beer at state campsites have wiped out their business. The entire ride up Big Run was empty...no one on this beautiful summer Friday evening!

Anyway, I looked on the wall at BJ's and I found some jiggin poles for ice fishing and bought them for $5.25 each. Found two Frabill tip ups with an inch of dust on them. The woman had no price so she told me $1 each.I felt guilty and offered her $5 each. Bought a nice skimmer for $2. They were LOADED with jigs of all kinds and I will be returning soon to buy them out. Bought a card of 10 Hali jigs for $6 and almost cried!!!

They also had big bins of soft plastics and bass fishing gear at ridiculous prices. I saw Rapala for 50 cents!!!! Seems like a bass boy could load up his tackle box with a ride down there.

Looks like you hit the jack-pot Strike. Defiantly jealous of those Hali's. I need to invest in a new battery for my vex. Wanted to get through last year with old one and that ended up being no problem. I will feel better spending money in the preseason since Boyd posted about the cold winters ahead.

How long have you had that Vex Shane? I'm wondering how long I have left on mine.

I think around 9yrs. It is the fl8se model. The unit shows a full charge however after about an hour it is down to 40-20% charge. It always lasted a full day but I know I am going to get burnt one day. If my vex ain't working I might pack up and go home. 9yrs for that battery is very good if you ask me feel like I defiantly got my money's worth.

Farmers Almanac calls for "cold and snowy" for the upcoming Winter. Is the Farmers Almanac something akin to a horoscope or is there some actual science behind it? Anybody know?

Nice find Strike....and good thing as you were probably running low on jigs, eh?    Im not sure how scientific the Almanac is, I know I buy one every year.  Heck, with the lack of cold last year, I'll have faith in chicken bones if they tell me we are going to have some ice this year!!  9 years out of a battery, thats pretty good.  And its not like they stay in a consistent environment....going from basement or garage with little use, to Cold, Warm charge recharge for a few month stretch, then back into hibernation.

Perchnut.....I now own 27 Hali jigs. Giggle....snort...chuckle.

And, as far as buying more tip ups and jigging poles......I can already outfit 6 other guys with a complete collection of ice fishing gear. I have nearly 30 tip ups alone and I only put 4 in my sled.

I used to think bow hunters were "gear junkies" but now I'm convinced that ice fishermen have it the worse. Sometime I catch myself wandering around stores that have ice tackle like I'm drunk....and I want "one of each".

I was thinking the other day how disappointed I am because I didn't lose or use much ice gear last season that I can't buy as much this year.  I think I am sick.  Does Nicklowes still have maggotts?

27 Hali, I've been using the same one for 5yrs. now. Luckily I haven't lost it, just had to replace the chain a couple times. Perch,Eyes and gills don't hurt them much, however trout and pike can beat them up.
