Hey folks,

I'll be coming out there in a couple weeks with my wife and our 1 year old son.  I'd really like to catch some yellow perch while I'm out there.  I'll probably bring my kayak and do a little fishing early in the AM and then come in for some family activities...

I'm thinking I'll launch the kayak at the state park.  Can you guys recommend where & how to get into some YP's in this area?

I'll post a full report after the trip

Thanks!
Trev

Go directly out from the State Park beach about 200 yards.  There is a hump that comes up to within 15 ft of the surface.  Fish all around this area including the top and all sides of the hump.  I've always done well here.  Good luck.

I second Bomberman, especially if you are luanching out of the park, you won't have to row far.  I have also had luck catching perch off of the point adjacent to the bridge on the west side of the lake (between the bridge and Arrowhead cove) which is also reachable form the park by Kayak.  You should be alright crossing the lake in the a.m. with the diminishing boat traffic.  Let us know how you do.

thanks guys, I will definitely give that spot a shot.  Do you guys think worms are adequate?  Or should I plan on fishing some minnows?  Or maybe some artificials?

Thanks!

I prefer minnows...small sinker on bottom...two droppers from the main line with # 8 hooks.  Toss it out, let it hit bottom and s-l-o-w-l-y crawl it back in.  When it gets directly below the boat, let it sit on a tight line for at least 30 seconds...just in case one was following it to give them a chance to decide to eat it.  Good luck.

I use the same rig and fish it the same as Bomberman,  with the exception I use 3 hooks above the sinker.  About 8 to 12 inches apart.  I use this same rig everywhere.  Yough Dam,  Lake Erie, and Lake Chataqua.  It works good everywhere.  Size of the sinker varies depending on water depth and how fast you're drifting.  I don't fish Deep Creek as often as I like, mainly because of the boat traffic.  I did fish it twice in the last week.  Wife and I had some friends in from NY and the Yough is pretty much dried up so we took them to Deep Creek last Saturday and Tuesday.   Boat taffic wasn't too bad.  Someone mentioned on another thread about the wind, well it was nasty last Saturday and the fishing was slow for us.   Got a few perch, some smallmouth and pickerel.  It was better on Tuesday.  But the fish were scattered.  Caught a few everywhere, but Penn Point Area was best.  Had to work for them but, the numbers were a lot better.  Sizes varied up to about 13 1/2 inches.  Kept a bakers dozen for a fish fry.  Probably fish it again on the 26th and 27th.

great pic, those are some really nice perch!

Our 1 year old son will be out there with us.  We're staying in a place that has a couple small sunny ponds on the property, so I'm hoping he'll catch his first fish out here!

He can almost walk, so I figure that means it's time to start fishing  (c:

Hi, this is Marty from Dayton Ohio.  I will be coming to DCl 10/4-9 and would appreciate knowing where to get fathead minnows. Buy, catch or trap is good.  Bill's only sells shiners.
Thanks,

Marty -- we had the same problem only we were coming from Kentucky two weeks ago, about a 6 hour trip to DCL.  We went to our local bait shop and bought a couple of hundred minnows, asked for them to be oxigenated (sp?),
picked them up the day of the trip, put them in an empty cooler without ice in the bag the bait shop provided, and drove to DCL

We lost very few (maybe 10 out of 200) and the minnows were very lively.
Needless to say, the price was a lot better ($8.00 per 150) and we were ready to fish when we launched the boat at the ramp.

Nicklow's Bait
Addison PA
Route 40
20 minutes from McHenry
Buy them by the pound.
Wholesale bait supplier for the region.

Last I was there, in the spring, they were trying to sell the business. Get their number online and call first.

Nicklow's is still open.  I stop there all the time.   Fatheads are going for about $11.50-12.50 a lb.   You get a lot in a lb.  You can also get just a 1/2 lb if you like.  Usually 6 or 7 bucks.

Hey Troutneye. The Perch in the Yough will all be in one spot by this weekend. My buddy is sick right now or else we'd be hitting them Saturday. We got 93 in 2 hours there last year....anchored. We never fish DCL accept through the ice. I'm trying to talk him into the trip over there this fall. I love the size at DC. I suppose I'm just ready for the ice.

Just a quick reply...but the whole time we were out there we had lousy weather.  It was like Forrest Gump...big fat rain, little tiny rain, sideways rain...you get the picture...!

Better luck next time...
