OK, many have expressed a desire to gather during the ice season.  Here are the particulars so far.

When: January 16, 17,18

Where: Deep Creek Lake (exact locale determined closer to date)

What:  Ice Fishing, Grilling, BSing

Other: Fishing4U2 has made a generous offer of accommodations.

What else am I missing?

Getthenet: How about a few different one or two day tourneys. Some of us have to work.

Hi Getthenet,

I'm guessing those January 2010 dates correspond to the MLKing holiday w/e, right?  Don't have next year's calendar yet, so I'm not sure.  I concur that planning an Icefest for any earlier than this is to run smack dab into holiday conflicts as well as to tempt ice-safety issues, and agree that a three-day window beats a two-day'er by far more than just 24 hours for FDC.com out-of-towners.

If so, then I'll need to clarify / qualify my offer for lodging a bit.  Like any other seasonal biz, I have to make hay while the sun shines, or the snow flies as the case may be... and to say the least its been a dismal year for haymaking (did'g'ya know it comes in red and black as well as usual green varieties?). During the best of times we have about four to five months with which to try and offset twelve months of expenses.  There's opportunity costs to be considered is all I'm saying.  Regrettably I'm not now in a position to underwrite lodging expenses, else I probably would!

The first floor unit of our cottage is set up to be able to accomodate relatively small groups of unrelated folks.  With only one bod per bed, 'A Rivers Rest' will hold ten or at most eleven. (in much cozier sleeping arrangements, 16-17 but its one thing to share an ice shelther and quite another a mattress).  So I'd be offering lodging for up to ten FDC'ers, first come first served, at $20 bill/berth/night, inclusive and payable in advance.  You'd pay almost that much for a primitive camp site - a chilling alternative thought.

To keep things simple I'll absorb the 6% state sales and the 5% county occupancy taxes if you'll kindly bring along a few sticks of fuel for the woodstove (the cottage is modern, neat, and clean; by no means a primitive hunting cabin... but that'll help offset utility costs). You bring sheets and towels.  Pillows and blankets and quilts already await you.  Its possible that another family or group might be renting the separate second floor unit ('Brookside'), so naturally for everyone's sake there's to be a clear expectation of mutual, mature, considerate, respectful early or late-hour co-existence (during those hours of the day let anyone who may be seeking their rest find it).  There'll be a parking plan - follow it to keep things moving along smoothly.

Like me for example, not everyone necessarily wants to directly compete, so I'd suggest a friendly, opt-in tourney format.  Have separate divisions for jiggers and those who use set-gear, maybe. Somebody (else) will have to head that effort up. As for food, the simplest option is eat out on your own, but I also know a good caterer if folks would prefer going that route.  There is a furnished kitchen, but from the perspective of a bunch folks trying to independently and simultaneously cook fresh, it is small.  Reheat?  Sure.  Much beyond that I see problems, especially for early-birds all racing the sun to reach the ice first.

If you'd like to stay here for FDC IceFest 2010 but perhaps have a non-fishing spouse or kids and need more privacy/space, consider reserving one of the other accomodations.  Each of the three b&b room has two beds; 'Brookside' cottage unit could sleep up to a maximum of 10 in winter.  See http://www.streams-and-dreams.net for full description, maps/directions, etc.

So, if you'd like to meet and hang with and learn from and otherwise enjoy some off-ice hours with the hardwater brethren of FDC, e-mail me direct at fishing4u2@juno.com  or after dark you can try me at 301 387-6881.

Looking forward to it,
'4u2 / Don

Can someone please provide "cliff notes" to 4Us above posting for Getthenet and I......

Nice place, but we like to stay on the lake to prevent driving after a long day of fishing and to stay until dark.

Ice, ice, ice.... is nice, nice, nice!!!!!!!

I think we should fly by the seat of our pants. Wait till we get some ice. Plan it about 2-3 weeks ahead. Keep it small....just for us guys.....with the idea that everyone is actually invited. Most of us regulars on the board either live close by or already know about our lodging. The rest of the guys will know where we are and if they can make it fine. Long term planning for ice events are a pain.

Icematt,
I think we could have tourneys just about any time you wanted.  Kinda like Ice Shanty.  Folks could print out the attached graphic and take a picture with it, the fish and a ruler and the biggest fish wins or most fish could win.  Many possibilites.  You set the date and photos must be posted the next day. Badda bing, badda boom.

I agree Getthenet. Another tourney on the lake would also be nice to meet everyone..... learn some tactics..... eat some food..... As per Striklead we should keep it to a minimum. I have three in my pack as it is. I will make your dates work. We always do a few Sunday/Monday trips anyway. Let there be ICE.

Please don't put your ugly mug in with the pictures of the fish though.... we don't want to ruin the site.

This whole thing of eating, drinking and ice fishing sounds like a rooten tooten good time. ICEMAAAAAAAAT I went up to Erie for steelhead on Mon. I only landed 3. They need more rain up there to get more fish into the streams. maybe in a couple weeks I'll go again.

we used to do eating, drinking, ice fishing, sans the competitive nature of a tourny and called them jamborees...side bets optional of course.  but if we dont want to worry about rule enforcement, start/finish times, etc....we just pick an area of the lake to congregate....just a thought....cmon ice!

Agreed. We do a pool pot for biggest perch, walleye, etc. Those are always fun. $5 per species. Then everyone isn't stressed trying to win a tourney.

And we do the entire season like Getthenet said on the website using rulers. I will be forced to buy a real camera.
