Fished on thurs. the 22 nd. with zero hits. That was the first time in many years that it happened. Water temp was 52 and a bit breezy, but we were very suprised that the fish would not bite at any of our reliable spots. Had many fish under us at most stops, with no hits. Was on the water from mid-afternoon until dark."Some times you get the bear, and some times the bear gets you". As a follow up to the fishing rod that was brought up at Holy Cross; my friend was at Beckman's Point on Wed. and brought up a tool-belt with pouches attached. Must of been in the water for a while because the tool pouches were coming apart. I have wondered if the snowmobiles that have gone thru the ice, have ever been recovered? |

Reply with quote | #2 | Hello Henhouse,
On your tough day, how was the water color, at least at the surface and in the shallows? As indicated by the exceptionally heavy resuspension of organic matter in the tailrace (strangely, this happened TWICE this month) I believe that DCL had a rather abrupt and intense fall turnover this year. This may have played some role in the fish being off their bite.
On the lost snowmobiles, I know of at least one that the owner managed to recover from about 12 feet of water but a couple of hundred feet offshore. He'd asked me to drill a few holes to help him get a positive fix on it, and to keep quiet about the location. That recovery operation must have been quite a chore.

Fishing; The water color looked fine but one thing I did notice was the areas that I mentioned; the bottom weed growth was much smaller than 2 weeks ago. I usually find fish very near heavy weed growth in 10 to 14 feet. The bottom looked a lot diffferent now. I guess I'm getting the boat out this week because the cove at the back end of North Glade is very shallow. Have to get ready for my trip to N.Y. for big brown trout. I love fishing Deep Creek, but feeling a big trout on a fly rod will get your heart rate up. Got 3 last year that were over 12 pounds. I'll let you know how we do. |

Reply with quote | #4 | I know what you mean about that extra-taut flyline... what a thrill to tangle with out-of-the-ordinary salmonids, to feel their raw surges of power through that handle and to hear that reel squeal.
Almost forgot to compliment you on making your original post... it may have been your first time, but I'm pretty sure everyone on this board has experienced the mega goose egg, complete with no runs, no hits, no errors, and needless to say not a single catch. Maybe because I used to be perfectly willing to fish even under the most adverse conditions (back in the day when I couldn't possibly get enough), I've zeroed many a time. Its easy to post when you've got some bragging rights coming, but it takes either a rank beginner or (as in this case) an experienced hand (mature, secure, and realistic) to announce to the world when it just didn't work out at all.
Kudos and enjoy NY! 4u2
