Reply with quote | #1 | A friend of mine has a 150hp Johnson which won't turn over even though the starter engauges the flywheel when the key is turned. We cant' turn the flywheel by hand, and the prop won't spin either...even with the shifter in NEUTRAL.
Our original thought was of course...the motor is locked up.
My thinking...If the motor is locked up, wouldn't the prop still spin freely with the shifter in NEUTRAL?
I realize that it requires only removing 5 bolts to remove the lower unit. It's just getting my friend to accept this troubleshooting step to determine if it's the motor or the lower unit that's locked up.
We know the battery has plenty of charge. The problem occured right after turning the motor off after about a 10 minute run at 50mph.
Has anyone ever had an outboard motor lock up? If so, would the prop spin in NEUTRAL?
Has anyone ever had a lower unit lock up? If so, did that cause the motor not to turn over?
I welcome and appreciate all thoughts and experiences with this issue. |

Try taking out the spark plugs and squirting some outboard mtr. oil in the cylinders .Then try to turn it over with the plugs out. With the plugs out, there will be no compression and it should turn over easily. That's what you do when an engine goes oveboard to get the water out.If that doesn't work, try 'rope starting" it to make sure you don't have an electrical problem. If you can't pull it by rope with the plugs out,I'd say it's locked up. __________________ Fishing can be anything you want it to be |

Take the lower unit oil screws out to see if there's any oil, milky oil or nothing in the lower unit .If you've given up disregard this post. __________________ Fishing can be anything you want it to be |

Thanks for the replies Nick. Yesterday we removed the lower unit and spark plugs...we can turn the motor by hand...it must be a problem in the lower unit. |

Actually we didn't even check the fluid. I stated that we removed the lower unit, when really we couldn't get the lower unit all the way off. We didn't have a manual with us to see that there is a screw or pin at the top of the shifter shaft which must be removed. Without removing that screw or pin, we were able to drop the lower unit about an inch and a half...enough to disengage the gears and turn the motor. Also I noticed a very loose bolt...one of two which hold together a housing the shifter shaft runs through. The second of the two bolts...MISSING. My friend said he noticed the motor vibrating a lot. I told him to get a new bolt and get that housing tightened up before having the lower unit checked out. Do you think the shifter shaft being out of place could be the problem? |

Could be.They're not hard to adjust. You losten the screw on the shift adjuster rod then move it up & down to get it in F & R. __________________ Fishing can be anything you want it to be |
