Why do they only allow sleds on the ice and not ATV's?

Or do they not allow sleds either, but everyone just rides them on the ice anyways?

When you say "sled," do you mean snowmobile/snow machine?

Russ, I'm guessing it's because there would be atv's all over the roads when there's no snow. I sure wish atv's were aloud.

I found my answer. Deep Creek Lake is part of the OVR trail system and four wheelers are allowed, but not during the winter months.

the northern portion of Meadow Mountain trail beginning at and running along East Shale Road (approximately 1/4 mile south of U.S. route 68) southward to the point where it intersects New Germany Road may only be used by: (1) snowmobiles from December 15 through March 15, except during the deer firearm season; and (2) two-wheel and four-wheel vehicles during the remainder of the year and during the deer firearms season.
  • The southern portion of Meadow Mountain Trail, beginning in Deep Creek Lake State Park, lies at the intersection of the Thayerville Fire Tower Road and the State Park Road and running in a northeasterly direction and ending on Compartment 77 may be used by snowmobiles, and may not be used by a motorized wheeled vehicle. A snowmobile may be unloaded either at designated Deep Creek Lake State Park parking lots or the New Germany State Park/Savage River State Forest maintenance parking lot if the snowmobile is driven directly to Meadow Mountain Trail on the designated access trails provided.

There goes another reason for buying an ATV then...darn!!  On the other hand ive been on lakes with thousands of motorized 'things' running all over, and aside from the occasional snowmobile, dcl is a nice and peaceful place....

I think it is to keep the trucks off.  Surely some Yeahoo would drive his 12 cylinder Ram with camper out there and have it sink. No way would "sportsman" be satisfied with just 4 wheelers. Give some folks an inch and they take a mile. Look at how many ice machines go though the ice each year and that is down right ridiculous. But, Life is Good, plenty of lake to share. Snow machines don't seem to bother the fish which is what matters to me.

And....at the end of the day when I'm totally worn out....to have a friend tow my sled off the ice with his 4 wheeler and to my truck is a godsend. I see both sides. I hate snowmobiles ripping across the ice when I'm relaxing but they surely can be a great utility when used on DCL.

alright, so I got it......ATV's shall only be allowed if they are towing icefishing equipment, and are actively engaged in the persuit of mighty yellow perch and frisky walleye; or taking a tired fisherman off of the ice after a long day of the previously mentioned persuits!

Yep, that's all I'm looking for is traveling for icefishing.  We all know too well how much of a pain it is to pull a shelter when there is snow on the lake.  I see very few sleds being used for icefishing so the ATV's would not be racing around the lake if they were to be used for icefishing only.

I have a Getthenet Shirpa to pull my shelter for me. It works real well and he loves a day on the ice. After fixing him up with a custom harness with a GPS attached he is able to drag the shelter to my exact holes. Of course I keep him blind folded as not to unveil these locations. He is able to use the GPS sound locater to find my spots. Sometimes he will even pull a small grill and entertainment center out for us on a second trip. We typically leave him a pale of water and some dead shiners for energy. Works real..... I recommend to everyone to get your very own Getthenet Shirpa Wagon. You can find them at most local watering holes.

Icematt,

You ain't got no honey holes.  You just open up my old holes.  I'll leave a few Wally teeth around them this year so you won't have as much trouble.

Another 6 weeks, Getthenet. Plenty of pre-ice bantering left before we wet a line.
